Art Gallery of South Australia

Art Gallery of South Australia

Founded in 1881, the Gallery is housed in a beautiful historic building, that opened in 1900, on Adelaide’s cultural boulevard, North Terrace. With the growth of the collections the building has expanded considerably since 1900, with major extensions in 1936, 1962 and, most recently, in 1996.

The Art Gallery of South Australia houses one of Australia's most stunning art collections. Its outstanding collection of 38,000 works covers Australian, European and North American, and Asian art and features paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, textiles, furniture, ceramics and metalwork and jewelery. It has a comprehensive collection of Australian art from the time of European settlement in the early nineteenth century to the present day. The European collection spans the Renaissance to the present, and the Asian collection covers twelve countries, from Turkey to Japan.

In addition to the permanent collection displays there is a dynamic program of exhibitions, educational programs and events, a shop, and a restaurant.

Why AB thinks The Art Gallery is one of Adelaides Best:  Adelaide's largest and main gallery displaying paintings, sculptures, furniture and more.  New and interesting exhibitions keep locals, tourists and school groups entertained and the restaurant is a lovely spot to take a break.
